Angela's Picnic 2015

If you're a car fanatic of any kind, especially from Jo'burg, and you haven't heard about Angela's Picnic, you need to hand over your Man Card. Angela’s Picnic is an event that commemorates Angela Heinz, a motoring enthusiast who originally set up the event so that the public could have the opportunity to view rare and special cars that would not normally be seen during the daily grind. The cars were all originally part of the South African Motor Clubs Association, the controlling body for over 30 single-marque car clubs, and many still are today. The event is open to anyone who wants to attend though, for a donation of course.  Angela's Picnic has been on the go for 33 years now, so I'm guessing it must be one of the longest running events of its kind. Linden's Delta Park is the venue for this gathering of the motoring inclined, and has been since inception.

Angela sadly succumbed to cancer many years ago, but the event was so successful that it simply carried on in her memory. A collection is done at every event and the money collected is handed over to organisations that deal with cancer research and hospices helping people with cancer and terminal illness. To date, the laid-back picnics have raised over R700 000 in Angela's memory.

I've been to many of these events, and I can safely say that this 2015 instalment was the biggest and busiest I've seen for myself. Instead of taking pics of everything I saw as per usual, this time I only took pics of either new cars that I haven't seen at the event before or of rare and interesting cars. Well rare and interesting to me anyway. I was there for around an hour and half, which was enough time to see everything and get in a few chats with some familiar faces and to catch up with some friends. As you can see, I have a thing for Porsches, but the car of the event for me was Basil's "new" LS3-powered '65 Corvette. Black on black on black - pure muscle car porn!

If you've never been to one of these events, make sure to get to the 2016 one. Mark it down in your diary now, it's usually the first Sunday in April, and barring a zombie apocalypse or a nuclear attack, it's going to be held at Delta Park in Linden. One thing though, get there early if you want to see all the best stuff. Many of these owners have been to every single event, which means they're no longer spring chickens, and they all seem to disappear at around noon - in time for an afternoon nap.
